Moms and Mentors is a registered B.C. society with dedicated volunteers working together to promote educational and career opportunities, social support for healthy parenting and assisting young families in a
nurturing, resourceful, and non-judgmental way.
As Rebekah said, "Both mothers and mentors in the program have provided me with support, and it has been encouraging to see other successful moms. A woman who particularly stood out for me continuously provided me with encouraging emails and peer support. Moms & Mentors has given me a sense of community and empowerment (2021)."
In the event of COVID restrictions, various outdoor venues and social distancing is put into place.

The seeds for Moms and Mentors Society was initially started in 1993 by Maureen Hobbs, Public Health Nurse who worked in collaboration with the Sooke School Board, the Belmont Secondary School Administrative team, Vice Principal Judy Robbins, School Counselor, Pam Harknett, Don Andrews with the Knights of Columbus, and several young parents. Together, they established a school based day care on site at Belmont Secondary in Langford, B.C. Following, Hobbs facilitated an accredited parenting course for young parents which provided an enriched and safe venue for parents juggling school and parenting. In 1995 as other experienced moms volunteered, including Pat Anderson, they helped to organize activities i.e., walks in the park, at the beach, sharing a meal, making a craft and enjoying the friendship of other families. Following their graduation, Jenn Powell and Alicia Pearce continued to work with Hobbs, and together they became the driving force behind Moms and Mentors, moving it from the school and public health agency, into the community. Working in collaboration with Donna Miller, Principal, Adult Education at Royal Roads, they were given access to a meeting place on campus, and computer classes taught by Janet Epps, Master Microsoft Educator. Participants worked at their computer skills and created a Moms and Mentors Cookbook and a photo documentary of their activities. Over the course of two decades Moms and Mentors have met in several locations in the West Shore, Colwood and Langford, B.C. . There's a monthly meeting called the Circle, where parents enjoy a snack and chat. The Circle is held in a safe place for kids to play and child care is provided. They also host a monthly zoom call for planning community walks as well as family activities. Moms and Mentors is a grass roots social support network with over 28 years to look back on! They host an annual Mentor Training program, including CPR, for those who are interested in volunteering. Moms and Mentors are a supportive link for young parents in the West Shore community, and continue to do so to this present day.

Moms and Mentor's scholarship program is supported by the West Shore Rotary, Lions and PEO and by others. As one mom stated, "it has made a tremendous difference. I would not be where I am without Moms & Mentors. Being a single mom and working full time, it helped me in building my future career as a nurse."
Donations to Moms and Mentors Society assists in meeting their goals i.e., funding an annual scholarship program, promoting literacy and social support through healthy family centered activities.
Our gatherings take place at the Lutheran Hall in the Westshore, 3024 Jacklin Rd. Langford and at Cherish at Central Park at 917 Avrill Rd. Victo Inquiries are welcome, contact:
